The teatment for hypoparathyroid disorder depends on the severity and the cause of the condition. Some possible treatments that a patient with hypoparathyroidism might incounter are...

Nutrition
  • Daily intake of 1.5-3 grams elemental calcium and 400-800 units vitamin D
  • Patient might have complications of hypercalcemia if this treatment is implemented too agressively for the patient, so the nurse needs to monitor for any possible complications of hypercalcemia
  • Diet changes made based on incresed patient age, EKG changes, neurologic symptoms, impaired renal function, level of hypocalcemia, general status of patient.

Medications
  • Acute intervention needed: Calcium gluconate, can be administered orally or IV depending on the severity of the situation
  • Maintinence therapy (chronic):
    • Calcium: calcium citrate, calcium carbonate, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, calcitriol
    • higher doses of vitamin D
    • Parathyroid hormone (which maybe just as effective as administering calcitriol)
