Welcome to Kaitlin and Chloe FA2011 Wikispace!!!

We will be presenting about:

  • Hyperparathyroidism
    • This is the "3rd most common endocrine disorder after diabetes and thyroid disorders" (Pyram, 2011).
    • This is the most common cause of hypercalcemia in the outpatient population.
    • Affects 1 in 500 women, 1 in 2000 men over 40 years old, with peak incidence in post menopausal women in their 50s and 60s.

  • Hypoparathyroidism
    • Very uncommon disorder of the parathyroid gland, occurs as often as 4 out of every 100,000 people
    • Risk factors for this disease usually surrond a family hisory of the disorder, other problems with the edocrine/autoimmune system, recent surgery on the neck involving the thyroid or parathyroid glands, radiation to the neck.
    • Hypoparathyroidism affects men and women equally and tends to occur in those younger than 16 years or older than 40 years of age.
    • If parathyroid hormone levels are low the pt will then have low levels of calcium leading to hypocalcemic signs and symptoms as well as complications.

Please take some time at the end of your learning experience to take our short quiz and see how much you've learned about these endocrine disorders.
